North Queensland protecting their patch with Crime Stoppers

Last month we launched our North Queensland campaign with an unprecedented social experiment, Crime Stoppers Street. Now, we get to release video footage of Cairns and Townsville residents playing their part in preventing crime in their community – and are delighted with the willingness of participants to protect their patch!

People were filmed as part of the experiment held along The Esplanade in Cairns and The Strand in Townsville, which reminded residents – in a light hearted way - that they should always be on the lookout for suspicious or illegal activity when they’re out and about in the community.

The campaign is part of our concerted effort to remind residents of the part they can play in stopping, solving and preventing crime in their community.

We’re pleased to see North Queensland has seen real improvement in crime reduction throughout 2013, but there’s still work to be done to ensure a safe community this busy festive season. We’re asking everyone to play their part by reporting what they know to Crime Stoppers, because it might just be their piece of information we need to solve the crime.

We’re not encouraging residents to become vigilantes – if you witness a crime happening, you should call the Police. However, if you have information to report about suspicious activity or after an event, Crime Stoppers is your point of contact.

The activity coincided with the launch of our new mobile App, which has already received more than 500 downloads to date. The App is an even easier way for people to anonymously report information about illegal or suspicious activity to Crime Stoppers. As well as providing a channel for residents to speak to us, it allows us to report back to them about the work we do in your community, and throughout other areas across the state.

Just like these local heroes in North Queensland, we can all play our part in solving and preventing crime and protect our patch by calling the Crime Stoppers on
1800 333 000, or visiting the website and downloading the mobile App.
